Christian Heins Architect
Refurbishment of vacant and deteriorated listed buildings for institutional use, transforming them into institutional spaces for arts, dance, and theatre departments.
-
Conducted a comprehensive architectural survey to assess the building's condition and identify key areas for restoration.
-
Developed interior layouts and designs, selecting finishes that highlight the building’s historical charm while meeting modern needs.
-
Collaborated closely with conservation consultants to ensure the design adhered to conservation guidelines, preserving the integrity of the building within the designated conservation area.
-
Produced detailed 3D visualisations to bring the design concept to life, ensuring clarity and coherence in the spatial arrangement.
A key feature of the design is the use of cement floor tiles, which not only reflect the historical and cultural heritage of the building but also enhance the design’s connection to traditional craftsmanship. These tiles were chosen to complement the 19th-century architectural language, becoming a symbolic element of the building’s revitalisation.
One of the main challenges was working with the existing structure and layout, which presented constraints in terms of space and functionality. This was addressed through thoughtful design, ensuring the building’s preservation while adapting it to meet the needs of its new purpose. By reinforcing the structure and creatively reworking the layout, the project successfully balanced heritage conservation with modern requirements.
This refurbishment will breathe new life into a significant historic building, re-establishing its role as a cultural and educational hub for the public university, and ensuring it continues to serve the community for generations to come.
